A Christmas Story Leg Lamp - 5 Ways to Decorate Your
Home With
This
Iconic Piece of Furniture If you are a fan of the quirky but classic holiday movie A Christmas Story then I'm sure you know all about the "A Christmas Story leg lamp." It's the lamp that looks like a woman's leg wearing high heels and comes complete with a fringed shade. Of course in the movie, Ralphie's Dad is the one who takes it out of the box and exclaims with great delight "Isn't it beautiful?" The leg lamp seems to be the one part of this memorable movie that people talk and laugh about for years afterward. But did you know that are several different ways that you can incorporate this one-of-a-kind piece of furniture into your own home decor? Oh yes. Here are just a few ways that you can have your very own A Christmas Story leg lamp on display this holiday season. - Of course if you want to use the lamp in the traditional way there are several different styles and sizes to choose from. There is everything from a desk sized lamp all the way up to a full size floor model and all of them are made to look just like the lamp from the movie. You can have this iconic piece of furniture in your home all year round or save it for the holidays. Either way it is sure to be a real conversation starter! - Another way to use this strange but adorable light fixture is to add it to your collection of bobble heads. That's right! There are leg lamp head knockers that have a shade that wiggles just like any other. In fact, there are many A Christmas Story bobble heads available including Ralphie. You can add these fun-loving characters to your collection and display them proudly over the holidays.
- There is even a unique way to make a BIG statement about how much you love the movie and the lamp. Instead of decorating your yard this Christmas with the traditional lawn ornaments, why not add an inflatable leg lamp? Can you imagine what your neighbors and passers-by would think if they saw an inflatable woman's leg topped with a lamp shade sitting on your front lawn? For fans of the movie, your property would be the talk of the town. - If you need a decorating idea that is a bit more subtle but still includes this hilarious element of the movie, there are A Christmas Story Collectibles that are a little less over-the-top. - My favorite is the Dept. 56 series of ceramic figurines that replicate the movie setting. There are houses and buildings like Ralphie's House and Highbee's Department Store but there are also miniature scenes like the one where Ralphie's Dad unwraps the lamp and of course Ralphie's brothers bunny suit. These pieces could replace a traditional Christmas village decoration for a more unique charm. - And what would a party be without Leg Lamp party lights? No one would ever forget your Christmas party if instead of the traditional twinkling white lights, your home was lit by several mini leg lamps hanging from a light string. So if A Christmas Story Leg Lamp is one of those items that you absolutely must have, be sure to consider all of these fun ways to incorporate it into your festive decor this holiday season. A Christmas Story Leg Lamp - The Icon of a Holiday
Classic
By Joe Egeberg
Of all of the memorable scenes from Jean Sheppard's "A Christmas Story," those revolving around the infamous leg lamp remain the most classic. The delivering and opening of the Old Man's "major award" from its wooden crate to decidedly mixed reviews in the Parker household captures the spirit of the film as a whole. The subsequent feud over the lamps destruction brings back nostalgic memories for anyone who had parents whose taste didn't always, shall we say, meet eye to eye. Available now in all of its lurid glory, the Christmas Story leg lamp makes a great gag gift for any friend or family member, as well as the perfect "major award" at the the annual office Christmas party.
In case your recollection of "A Christmas Story" is a little fuzzy, it arrives late one night a few short days before Christmas. When answering a rough knock at the door, a pair of gruff delivery men wheel in an over sized wooden crate marked "FRAGILE," which the Old Man reads as "Fraa-Geel-Aye! Must be Italian!!" After rooting through the inexplicable mountain of packing materials, Parker finally retrieves from the box with a look of pained reverence the item in question: a life sized lamp in the shape of a burlesque dancer's leg, complete with fishnet stockings.
Mrs. Parker, baffled in embarrassment as she attempts to shield her children's eyes, is too shocked to stop the Old Man before he sets up the lamp and brings it to life in the center of the front window of the home. The Old Man proceeds out to admire the Leg Lamp from the street as his neighbors gather to congratulate him on receiving such a major award. Incidentally, while the Parker family is oblivious to the source of the lamp in the actual film, the Leg Lamp was actually a very real promotional item for Nehi soda at the time that the film's writer thought was just too gaudy to pass up for Old Man Parker.
Regardless of one's feelings about the holiday season, nearly everyone has a soft spot in their heart for the film "A Christmas Story." While the Leg Lamp might not become the centerpiece of the gift recipient's home decor, you can be sure that everyone will be in on the joke as soon as gift is being unwrapped. Just be sure not to leave the "Mrs." alone in the living room with it.
Joe Egeberg is the owner of One Leg Up, a company
which specializes in authentic replicas of the "A Christmas Story" leg
lamp and featured in the 20th Anniversary DVD. He especially enjoys
hearing the recipient's reactions to receiving this coveted "Major
Award".
